Hospital Location

High-dependency units (HDU)

The High-Dependency Unit (HDU) provides specialized care for patients who are critically unwell and need close observation, but do not require full Intensive Care Unit (ICU) support. It acts as an intermediate level of care between the general ward and ICU, ensuring that patients receive continuous monitoring and timely medical intervention during recovery from major illness, surgery or trauma. The HDU supports patients who are medically fragile and need vigilant supervision until their condition stabilizes.

The focus of HDU care is to provide safe transition, prevent complications, improve clinical outcomes and promote gradual recovery through structured medical and nursing support.

Conditions Managed in HDU

• Patients recovering from critical illness after being shifted from ICU
• Post-operative patients requiring continuous monitoring
• Severe infections requiring oxygen or non-invasive ventilatory support
• Neurological conditions requiring observation after seizure or stroke
• Cardiac patients after stabilization of emergency events
• Patients needing frequent vital checks and close nursing supervision
• Severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance or acute medical episodes

Key Features & Facilities

• Dedicated HDU beds with advanced monitoring equipment
• Continuous supervision by trained doctors and critical care nurses
• Oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP) available
• Built-in emergency response protocol for sudden deterioration
• Early mobilization and step-down rehabilitation support
• Medication management with IV therapies and strict charting
• Infection-control standards to ensure patient safety
• Smooth transition to ICU or general ward depending on condition

When Should Patients Be Shifted to HDU

• When a patient is improving after ICU treatment but still needs advanced monitoring
• When a post-surgery patient requires frequent observation and support
• When a medical condition is not critical enough for ICU but too unstable for ward
• When there is risk of sudden deterioration and close vigilance is necessary
